Night Skincare Routine: How to Do It?

Sleep is fundamental in terms of both quantity and quality; therefore, it is important to rest well and dedicate enough time to sleep. Sleeping is not synonymous with closing your eyes and losing precious time: during the night, our body recharges its energy to face the new day and all the activities that need to be carried out.

What happens to our body during the night?

It's important to remember that with sleep, we are taking care of ourselves. Today, we know that our body follows its own internal clock governed by a cycle: the circadian rhythm.

Even if we don't realize it, while we sleep, our body undergoes different processes, and in particular, a general detoxification. Our body cells, therefore, expel all the toxins accumulated during the day.

When we sleep poorly, this process does not occur completely, and we wake up with a dull complexion, dark circles, bags, accentuated wrinkles, and impure skin.

During the day, the epidermis, especially that of the face and periorbital area, which is more exposed, must implement defense mechanisms against cold, wind, sun, stress, and pollution; in the evening, however, it's time for restoration. While we sleep, the epidermis uses this time to activate self-repair mechanisms for damage caused by smog and UV rays. Therefore, a lack of proper and healthy rest alters our biological clock, which affects the well-being and beauty of our skin.

Night Skincare Routine: How to Do It?

It is precisely during the night that the skin regenerates much faster because the microcirculation increases, and cellular exchange improves, eliminating toxins. For this reason, I recommend the use of cosmetics before going to sleep, when the skin is also more receptive and ready to absorb nutrients.

Sleeping enough hours, reducing stress—not just physical stress responsible for the production of free radicals and cellular aging—having a proper diet, drinking, and eating correctly are the prerequisites for psycho-physical well-being and for radiant skin. It is therefore essential to choose and aim for the perfect nightly skincare to generally slow down premature aging.

Cleansing is the first necessary and indispensable step for clean skin, not only from the sebum we normally produce during the day, but also from impurities, makeup, smog, and fine dust.

Whether it's a delicate soap, a cleansing water for more combination skin types, a cream cleanser for skin that needs more nourishment, or even a peel and various masks, it's essential to use them to cleanse the face and prepare it for subsequent treatments.

Twice a week, always in the evening, opt for facial peels or delicate exfoliants, perhaps with vegetable and not plastic micro-granules and with mandelic acid, to renew and accelerate cellular turnover, which eliminates dead cells. For skin that needs a slightly deeper cleanse, I also recommend using a good toner.

For the second step, I always like to treat the periorbital area, even if it's not a fixed rule. Face serum and eye contour cream are equally important. Taking care of the area around the eyes, especially in the evening and as we age, is a trick to prevent the appearance of expression lines or various imperfections.

Face serum is a must-have in daily skin care. There are serums with an anti-aging action and others that simply nourish the epidermis. Like any cosmetic product, it largely depends on the active ingredients present within it and must be chosen correctly, with hyaluronic, salicylic, lactobacilli, or retinol.

Often, serum alone at night cannot meet the needs of dull, asphyxiated, or malnourished skin; for this reason, I often recommend applying a cream enriched with Vitamins E, F, and precious oils. A real treat for those who apply it!

Now you might ask: how long does it take to perform a correct beauty routine? My answer is simple: less than 5 minutes. Try it!
