Microplastic pollution, caused by tiny waste particles dispersed into the environment and food (and, consequently, into the human body), is one of the greatest challenges of our time and among the most discussed problems concerning the planet.

According to the latest report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), every square kilometer of ocean contains, on average, 63,320 microplastic particles. The Mediterranean is one of the most polluted seas in the world. Furthermore, there are five oceanic regions where, due to currents, the largest quantities of debris accumulate.

Internationally, there is no recognized definition of microplastics (MP). The term microplastics refers to "small particles (of plastic material) composed of mixtures of polymers and functional additives, solid and insoluble in water, with dimensions smaller than 5 mm" (ref. ECHA – European Chemical Agency).

Microplastics: Where Do They Come From?

When we think of pollution and plastic, we usually associate the latter with large bottles and packaging. Microplastics, however, can come from various sources: from cosmetics, personal and household detergents, in building materials, and from clothing.


176,000 tons per year is the amount of microplastics discharged and released into European waters; these microplastics derive from products that contain them (fertilizers, plant protection products, cosmetics, industrial and household detergents, cleaning products, paints, granular infill used in artificial turf fields, etc.).

The potential for microplastic emissions into the environment from rinse-off cosmetic products, including makeup products, represents less than 2% of all microplastics intentionally added to any type of product (source: Cosmetics Europe Public Consultation on SEAC Draft Opinion).


From the 1990s until a few years ago, microbeads were found in approximately 90% of cosmetic products for skin exfoliation, cleansers, toothpastes, and scrubs.

These residues end up in the sea and are ingested by fish, which then end up on our tables every day.

Since January 1, 2020 (Budget Law of 2018, art.1 comma 546 et seq.), polyethylene microgranules in exfoliating or rinse-off scrub formulations are prohibited. Plastics in general have now entered our food chain, causing long-term damage to our health.

Microplastics and Human Health

Recent experimental studies have shown that, once absorbed, these tiny particles deposit in the liver, kidneys, and intestines, causing chronic inflammatory states with consequent damage to the immune and nervous systems.

Among the latest research is a study measuring plastic polymers-plexiglass in trace amounts in blood samples. An average quantity of 1.6 micrograms per milliliter was found. Like a teaspoon in 1,000 liters of water.
