Klamath Algae: Properties and Benefits

Alga Klamath: proprietà e benefici

Klamath algae is defined as the queen of superfoods due to the power of its components, its wild nature, and the uniqueness of the environmental conditions in which it grows and reproduces spontaneously.
The blue-green microalga is the last wild superfood on the planet. It lives and reproduces only in the homonymous lake in Oregon under absolutely unique environmental and climatic conditions. Klamath is a practically pristine lake; it is fed by rivers and streams dense with volcanic material and with a bottom whose deposits of bioavailable minerals reach up to 10 meters in height.

It is part of a protected natural area, whose climate combines as many as 300 days of sunshine a year, with exceptional photosynthetic opportunities. Cold winters force the algae to produce the very important essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. The primordial nature of the microalga, which encompasses both plant and animal characteristics, leads to the almost perfection of its nutritional profile.
It appeared on Earth about 3.5 billion years ago; Klamath algae (Aphanizomenon flos aquae, or "invisible flower of water") has ancient origins and a profile of nutrients and accessory molecules of unquestionable biological value, whose role has been repeatedly confirmed by modern scientific research.

Thanks to the fresh waters of the lake, it is extremely safe even for individuals who do not tolerate sodium or marine iodine intake. It contains high percentages of protein, from 59% to 65%, all 20 essential and non-essential amino acids in optimal proportion in a bioavailable form, vitamins and minerals in a well-assimilable form.

THE PROPERTIES OF KLAMATH ALGAE

Klamath algae is an excellent source of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids in a balanced ratio; these are capable of inhibiting inflammatory states and cardiovascular disorders. It is also very rich in B vitamins and the lesser-known vitamin K. Finally, it contains numerous antioxidant pigments and carotenoids, including alpha and gamma-carotene, which perform important anti-tumor, antiviral, and anti-aging functions.
According to numerous researches and scientific studies, several therapeutic properties are attributable to the microalga:

- In the immune area, it plays an important role in reducing the production of free radicals and the level of general inflammation of the body. Several studies show how it can lead, within two hours of assumption, to the migration of 40% (almost one billion) of T-lymphocytes or Natural Killer Cells from the blood to organs and tissues. This important discovery categorizes it as an immunomodulatory substance, rather than an immunostimulatory one;

- In the anti-inflammatory area, thanks to phycocyanins, phytonutrients responsible for the blue-green color of algae, it is able to inhibit both COX-2 and the enzyme phospholipase A2, also involved in the mechanism of PGE2 production. It has also been shown that phycocyanins are able to inhibit lipoxygenase, an enzyme that promotes leukotrienes, responsible for various forms of inflammation, including asthma and colitis;

- In the metabolic area, thanks to its function on fat and carbohydrate metabolism, it can be used as an ally in weight loss.

BENEFITS OF KLAMATH ALGAE

Thanks to its high phenylethylamine content, it is also very useful in the neurological area for its positive effects on mood regulation and helps combat depression. Last but not least, this molecule is able to intervene in the re-uptake mechanism of dopamine, a monoamine that acts as an anorexigenic neurotransmitter.

Finally, it is also able to provide great benefits topically, thanks to the similarity of its cell wall to that of human dermal cells. This allows it to be accepted and sent down to the deepest layers of the skin, providing effective nourishment.

Moreover, it also acts as a natural vehicle; it allows other molecules essential for skin well-being to reach a depth that, with topical application alone, they normally would not.

This last aspect only highlights how Klamath microalgae deserves its crown. A true 360-degree superfood capable of nourishing us both internally and externally.
